About the Talk:
In biology and many other fields, large amounts of data are produced for whose analysis and interpretation mathematical methods are required.
In the beginning, this was usually done on the basis of simple physical models, but the increasing complexity of the data then required more abstract tools.
Often, one no longer knows what to look for in the data, and we need new mathematical tools to find structure in such data. Thus, the role of mathematics is becoming ever more important.
Biography of Speaker:
Professor Jost is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences and Honorary Professor at the Department of Mathematics at Universität Leipzig.
He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, an External Member of Santa Fe Institute for the Sciences of Complexity, a Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Academy of Sciences and Literature at Mainz, and the Saxonian Academy of Sciences.
He received his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Bonn. His awards include the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (1993) and the ERC Advanced Grant (2010).
He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, University of California San Diego, University of Bonn, Australian National University, Math Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), Harvard University, ETH Zürich, IHES (Paris) and Santa Fe Institute. His research interests include geometry and analysis, complex systems, AI, machine learning, mathematical and computational biology and neuroscience, linguistics, network theory, and strategy/decision making.
